THE CAUSE
Each day, patients of Bay Area hospitals use over 600 pints of blood. There is a constant need for blood and donors are essential in replenishing the supply. The LGBTQ community would like to help replenish the nation’s blood supply, but the U.S. Food and Drug Administration imposed a ban on blood donations from men who’ve had sex with men (MSM) in 1983.
In 2014, the FDA announced it will end its lifetime ban against gay/bisexual male blood donors by a deferral period for MSM to 12 months (one year) since the last sexual contact.
